This 6 day fly / drive itinerary is great for those visitors who are pressed for time but still want to see the major attractions in the north of Ethiopia. The tour will visit the towns of Addis Ababa, Axum, Lalibela, Gondar and Bahir Dar.
ArrivalArrival into Addis Ababa followed by short transfer to a city center hotel. Depending on the arrival time of your flight, we will take you on a short city tour of Addis Ababa.
ADDIS ABABA / AXUMRise early and take the morning flight to Axum (also spelled Aksum) right in the very North of Ethiopia. Axum is famous for it ancient obelisks. The most famous one is a 1,700-year-old, 24-metre-tall granite stele/obelisk, weighing 160 tonnes. Other sightseeing visits will take in the church of St. Mary, Axum Stelae Field, tomb of King Kaleb, pool of Queen Sheba, and much more.
AXUM / LALIBELAUp early again and take another short internal flight – this time to Lalibela. On route from the airport to the town, stop off at Nakute Leab Church. Lalibela is famous for it’s incredible monolithic rock-cut churches. Lalibela is also one of Ethiopia’s holiest cities, second only to Aksum, and a center of pilgrimage. A local guide will take you on a walking tour of all the rock churches located in the town.
LALIBELA / GONDARAfter an early breakfast, take the next internal flight; this time to Gondar. Gondar is known as the “Camelot of Africa” due to the existence of a number of castles in the heart of the city. Other sightseeing destinations on this day will be the Debre Berhan Selassie Church and Fasilides’ Bath.
GONDAR / BAHIR DARAfter breakfast, visit the Qusquam Monastery and Church before driving 3 hours south to the lakeside town of Bahir Dar. Bahir Dar is one of Ethiopia’s newest city and has a young vibrant population. The town is set on the banks of Lake Tana – Ethiopia’s largest lake and also the source of the Blue Nile river. In the afternoon, take a trip to a viewpoint looking over the lake. The viewpoint is located beside the old Palace of Haile Selassie – known as Bezawit Palace.
BAHIR DAR / ADDIS ABABAIn the morning, take a boat ride on Lake Tana, visiting Ura Kidane Mihiret monastery and church. After lunch, visit the Blue Nile falls; one of Ethiopia’s most spectacular waterfalls. Late in the afternoon, take a flight back to Addis Ababa.Once we arrive back in Addis Ababa, the program will finish.
