Ethiopia’s Omo Valley is one of the most culturally diverse regions in all of Africa.

On this trip we head into the villages of the various tribes that make up this kaleidoscope of ethnicity, including the Mursi, Karo, Hamer-Benna, Konso, and others, learning about their complex customs and experiencing a way of life very far removed from the rest of the world.

Itineraries

Day 1

ADDIS ABABA / ARBA MINCH / DORZE

Take the morning flight from Addis Ababa to Arba Minch. Arrive in Arba Minch around 10.00 am and drive to the Dorze Lodge. The lodge is around 20km outside of Arba Minch on a rough road.

Day 2

DORZE / TURMI

On day 2, we’ll leave Dorze and head towards Turmi. On route, there will be stop offs at Karat Konso, Weito, and Erbore. The stop at Erbore will allow you to take photos of the Erbore people. Once we arrival in Turmi and if you are lucky we may get a chance to attend a bull-jumping ceremony in a Hamer village near Turmi. Rest at the lodge in the evening.

Day 3

TURMI / OMORATE / TURMI

Today, drive 70km close to the Kenya border to visit the Dassanech tribe. The Daasanach are an ethnic group of Ethiopia, Kenya and Sudan. Their main homeland is in the Debub Omo Zone of the Southern Nations, Nationalities, and People’s Region of Ethiopia, around the North end of Lake Turkana. Drive back to Turmi in the afternoon.

Day 4

TURMI / JINKA

Today we’ll drive from Turmi to Jinka. On the way we make a stop-over at Key Afar, where every Thursday there is a local market. This market attracts Hamer, Benna, Konso, Ari, and many other people of the South Omo. Arrival to Jinka late in the afternoon and rest at the hotel.

Day 5

JINKA / MURSI / JINKA

Today, we’ll take the full day to explore the Mago National Park. In this park live the Mursi tribal people. It is probably best known in the South Omo Valley, because women of this tribe slit their lower lip and insert a clay or wooden plate, and men fight donga (a stick fight which determines the most eligible bachelors ready to get married). Return to Jinka in the afternoon.

Day 6

JINKA / ARBA MINCH

After breakfast, we’ll depart Jinka and head back towards Arba Minch. Arrive in Arba Minch around lunchtime. Free to relax for the rest of the day.

Day 7

ARBA MINCH

In the morning, take a boat ride on Lake Chamo which is part of the Nech Sar National Park. Here you can observe huge crocodiles and hippos in the wild, as well as lots of water birds. Lunch will be in Arba Minch, after which we’ll can visit the crocodile farm. Free time in the evening to relax around the lodge.

Day 8

ARBA MINCH / ADDIS ABABA

After breakfast, we’ll take the short transfer to Arba Minch airport to catch the morning flight back to Addis Ababa. Once we arrive back in the capital, the program will finish.
